You can support opportunities like the M1 end-of-year celebration and more by contributing to the UNMC College of Medicine Parents and Family Innovation Fund today.
For Hayley Moree, her first year at the University of Nebraska Medical Center came with little down time.
She knew that between the lectures, exams and time spent in the anatomy lab there would be little time for life outside the classroom. It’s a grind that she was committed to completing to pursue her dream of a career in healthcare.
However, that hard work should be celebrated. That’s where UNMC’s College of Medicine Parents and Family Innovation Fund comes into play.
Each year, the Parents and Family Association funds the end-of-year celebration for first-year medical students. The event, which happens following the students’ final exam in May, marks the end of their first year in medical school.
“It’s kind of like a last hurrah for the M1 class,” said Moree, the Class of 2029 alumni chair and organizer for this year’s celebration. “All of us can just come together, socialize and relax a little bit after a strenuous year.”
Moree said she saw a strong turnout among her classmates during this year’s celebration. Seeing that community come together to celebrate their collective accomplishments provided her with the encouragement to approach the upcoming year with confidence.
“I think a lot of us realized what we had all accomplished together,” Moree said. “We also realized that we should be confident in ourselves because we can do hard things, and it should be celebrated.”
In addition to the annual M1 end-of-year celebration, the Parents and Family Association also supports Match Day and graduation events. Moree said donor support for these events is positively impacting UNMC students.
“I just want to say thank you to anyone who has supported this fund,” she said. “I think the unique thing about this kind of support is that it is bringing our community closer. Our donors are making a direct impact on making UNMC a place where everyone feels welcome.”
