With over 120 recognized student organizations at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, there is something for everyone.

That may be a student interest group representing one of the university’s colleges or recreational and community impact groups meant to provide students with new hobbies or passions outside of the classroom.

Nicole Askew, student organization activities coordinator in UNMC’s Student Life Involvement and Development Office, said these organizations provide students with a wide range of opportunities to find their place on campus.

“It’s so nice for students to have something outside the classroom, even if it is directly tied to what they’re going to school for,” she said. “We have a wide variety of programs that really helps us be inclusive for students to help them find that niche that they’re looking for.”

By participating in these RSOs, Askew said students have the chance to build important leadership skills, friendships and connections that simply wouldn’t be available otherwise.

“Different employers in the health care field and outside of it really want to see students who are involved outside of the classroom,” Askew said. “I think if we were to not have those opportunities for our students, it would really affect campus life in general.”

The diverse array of RSOs offered at UNMC all have one thing in common: the critical role of donor support. Through opportunities like For the Greater Good, student organizations have the opportunity to raise funds that will create long-term success for the group and its members.

“I think participating in a giving day is so impactful because it not only helps our organizations that already exist continue to function, but it also helps build the foundation for the 10 to 15 new RSOs that have been created in the last year,” Askew said. “It’s just a great platform for our student organizations to show what a great impact they have on campus.”

You can continue to support student organizations at UNMC by making a gift to the UNMC Student Organization Support Fund today or by participating in this year’s For the Greater Good, a giving day to support UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, from noon to noon April 22-23.
